To say that I'm embarrassed is an understatement. Why is it seemingly impossible for me to update this thing?! Why is Lane able to check all kinds of sports scores and view various game clips on a daily basis, but not update our Xanga site? We may never know. The following is a brief overview of the last 10 months. We accept all efforts (gentle and forceful) to hold us accountable to regular updates.
We should have a suite at Evansville Regional Airport. This was taken after a WONDERFUL summer in America, and before we said (gulp) goodbye to Jeffer. Lane and I, along with the girls, returned to Germany to finish moving (our fourth in five years) and to prepare the dorm for the arrival of 29 dorm sons. We look like we indulged in a little too much Los Bravos (Mexican food) while we were home!
Another reason for returning before taking Jeffer to college was to meet our new staff. Nate is in the middle, then Timmy and Joni. Joni is a third year RA, Nate a second year, and Timmy is fresh from Columbia, South Carolina. Another RA, Juli, was added to our staff in October.
All hands on deck! Getting the dorm up and running is no small task. Emma is helping put together cleaning buckets for the guys with a bathroom in their room. I was horrified when the discovery was made AFTER Christmas break that some of the bathroom cleaning wipes had not been opened. I guess the guys don't get as excited as I do about that fresh lemon scent.
Lane and our two guy RAs during our welcome-to-the-dorm meeting with our 9 new guys.
Two of our seniors, Josh and Kingsley, catch up upon their arrival back to the dorm.
The first First Day of School picture without Jeffer. This was taken on the way to the bus stop. Haus Maugenhard is just up the road on the right.
Lane and I returned to America two weeks later to escort Jeffer to Anderson University. We're sitting on his bunk bed in his dorm room...the last photo before a tearful goodbye. Makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it.
Some of the guys borrowed what they thought was a hip-hop instructional video from the girls dorm in the next village. Little did they know that the girls had swapped the video (after making a very believable case cover) with a Richard Simmons Sweatin' to the Oldies video. They let me in on their little secret so I was ready with the camera. I snapped this just as they realized what had gone down.
The guys were ready to dance, so they started sweatin' to the oldies with Richard! One by one folks jumped in. That's Lane in the jeans and white T-shirt on the far right. Emma and her friend are in the back. By the way, this is taken in the family room of our dorm.
At some point during the workout, the entire girls dorm(dressed in their best 80's garb) sneaked in behind our guys and joined the fun. That's Meghan in the apron...she left her cookie making task to join the fun.
Each dorm has their own birthday traditions. At Maugenhard, the birthday boy is pied in the face by their roommate, then carried down the road to a trough of water for a birthday plunge. This was Brandon's 18th. The parade down the street to dunk Thandazo on his 17th.
Each Sunday we have dorm fellowship, which is just a time for us to be together as a dorm. One Sunday we went in to Basel, Switzerland for a McDonald's dinner and a movie. Here we broke the guys up into squads for a test of strength and will.
I told some of the guys that I needed some corn stalks to finish off my fall door decorations. We went under the cover of night......
You can turn ANYTHING into a mission in a high school boys dorm!
Speaking of mission......our seniors needed nun costumes for the black and white themed Fall Rally. Joni and I wowed them with our version fashioned from trash bags and white and black t-shirts.
Herbstmesse in Basel. Lane is with one of our former dorm sons from HBR. We've been with him for five years. He graduates in June.
I just learned that this is a Korean thing to do in pictures. Who knew? Sam is precious and is hoping to attend Notre Dame next year.
Dorm life can wear out a person...and a dog! Our RA Timmy and Maggie enjoying a much needed nap in the staff office.
This was one of those fun spontaneous happenings in the dorm. We were cleaning up after dinner and someone put on some great dance music...before we knew it the kitchen looked like a disco! One of the guys ran up to his room and brought back his black light. It didn't take us long to realize that our yellow cleaner glowed, so we added it to our dance routine...see the next picture in black light..
I walked into our apartment one Saturday afternoon and found this selection of folks watching a movie. Notice Maggie's choice spot.
Emma in her German soccer club uniform
Aaron, one of our seniors, thought it would be fun to dress up like Santa and wake up Emma on her 14th birthday...the other girl is Emma's friend, Chloe.
Meghan and her friend, "Z" (he has a long African name so "Z" is what the white folks call him) at the Christmas banquet
More from Christmas banquet The residents of Haus Maugenhard at Christmas banquet
Three of our juniors A rousing game of Risk on a Saturday evening.
Dorm Thanksgiving..we fed 50
Kingsley washing pots and pans after our Thanksgiving meal....look at his tower of pans...that explains his grimace. Kingsley's brother, Kenneth, enjoying a bonding moment with Maggie. Remember the TV show Webster? Kenneth is his look a like!
Hae Seok Won is in charge of Korean care at BFA, and subs at our dorm every other Monday night...here she is with one of our seniors making Korean pancakes. Emma after being "pied" by Meghan on her birthday David stopped in for a bedtime story
My wonderful friend, Michele Phoenix, and Emma making cinnamon rolls for the guys.
Jeffer surprised his sisters with his return. They both burst into tears the minute they saw him!
Lane's side of the family came for a Deutschland Christmas. We missed the Nussmeiers! One of our home church Sundays over break. Maggie joined us for one of Pastor David's messages on Law and Grace. We LOVE being able to download messages from CFC.
The boys are back and we are in full swing of second semester. Jeffer is back in Indiana and loving his new schedule and driving. We remain ever grateful for your support and love.
